library website content management system layer and SharePoint

It is possible, but not recommended. We are about to launch our new library website in SharePoint in late August, but the path here was overly-complicated due to the need for some very deep development work of SharePoint by campus IT. I think anyone versed in SharePoint will be pretty surprised to see what our developers were able to pull off, including responsive design and integration with 3rd party APIs. But honestly, it took them a lot of time and effort and with the many other CMS out there (and in this day and age, you should be using a CMS), there were many other options, including .Net CMS options with ready-made modules, that we could have gone with and saved a lot of development time on. But SharePoint was the chosen campus solution, and the team did a pretty amazing job pulling it off…but it’s still SharePoint, so you’ll face redundant workflows and browser compatibility issues for your content editors.

We’ll be live Aug 28th if you want to check back then...

We use SP for our student portal already. You need to be a .Net developer if you want to build anything functional to be used in SharePoint OR, iFrame in your stuff. SharePoint and Content Management don’t really go together. I’ve never seen a content management solution that works well with SharePoint. (I was the SharePoint admin for our campus for a number of years.)

Apparently SharePoint is being used by campus IT to develop a one-stop-shop for students to manage various aspects of their courses, etc. and my boss and library director wants the library to be included in some way that is most effective in promoting services and resources for students, hopefully even at a granular subject-level, if at all possible. I really know very little about SharePoint and what can be done; he asked me yesterday to begin researching this. At the same time, we are ready to move forward with creating a new, modern, dynamic website. I have been using DreamWeaver to create and maintain our library website for the past seven years. So we are wondering if there is any CMS out there that is mainly used for the library website, but in some way connects or communicates with SharePoint when it is used as a campus portal.

Thanks so much for all feedback thus far!
Shannon

+1

What are you trying to accomplish by using SharePoint with your website? Maybe there’s another, better way.

Shannon,
I have had direct experience with trying to use SharePoint as a CMS. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and avoid doing so it at all possible.

Has anyone developed a library website/content management system that works with SharePoint? Or know of such capability and good information sources about SharePoint working in conjunction with websites?

Thanks.
