Library Web Apps and Mobile Apps

I'm also on the jQuery Moblie bandwagon. We used it for our library's site release in Sept. http://m.lib.msu.edu. It was very helpful. We have a page in there for vender database access which links only to those that are mobile friendly and have listed apps that vendors are providing.

I second Ina's suggestion for using jQuery Mobile; I released our library's
first mobile site this summer (http://m.library.iit.edu), and the framework
allowed me to concentrate on the university-specific items I had to address
(such as rewriting our textbook checkout code) rather than how to make it
look nice on various mobile platforms.

Good day all

I suggest that you maybe take a look at JQuery for mobile phones:
http://jquerymobile.com/ A unified, HTML5-based user interface system for
all popular mobile device platforms, built on the rock-solid jQuery and
jQuery UI foundation. Its lightweight code is built with progressive
enhancement, and has a flexible, easily themeable design. Our mobile web
page was designed with this - access it from your smartphone:

Dear Michael and Precious,
I am in awe and very much speechless. First of all, I am from the
beautiful islands of Palau, which is among the Micronesian Islands as well.
I work at an Academic library in Palau, which is housed at the Palau
Community College. The only college in Palau. I read your postings and was
very much interested in Mobile Libs. I'm not sure what it is though, but we
are in the process of starting or introducing some sort of a Mobile Library
as in a Van or Bus.Is it the same thing??? We are trying to establish one so
that we can serve other states or villages in Palau that does not have
access to the internet or that has scarce services to the internet or
library at all. I would much appreciate if you would offer any suggestions
or advice since you guys are way ahead of us in terms of technology and
services. Your help would mean so much to us, as we are striving to keep up
with the rest of the world.... Thank You..... Regards and Blessings from the
beautiful Island of Pal!
au.

Dear Michael and Precious,

Pls explain: by mobile apps. we are discussing androids, tablets and
iPads are we? In any case since Precious mentioned mobile libs. (as in
buses and vans, I presume), we do have those as well, at least one bus
for each district in my state of Sabah. They are very well-used as we
service the rural schools which have no other means of access to any
othe library services. We also have mobile vans that provide internet
access, therefore these are strictly mobile cybercafe. They are
well-equiped with 10 laptops and courses on how to access the internet
and search strategies are given.

Perhaps, someone could clarify more about the mobile applications or
lib web apps. We are really keen on those too.

Dear all

I am a reference librarian at The Presidency office, South Africa.
Presidency library is a special library caterer for government
employees who have special needs related to socio-political issues,
legal, media, African leaders, government. I feel honored to be in one
of your knowledge sharing groups.

Thank you for bringing that question Michael. In the next financial
year, implementing mobile library will be one of my 2012 projects.
This will enable my clients /users to access the catalogue, electronic
resources through their mobile phones since they are travelling a lot.

Can anyone who has already used that service share how to go about
implementing it, the experiences and challenges.

The Best, always

Precious

Greetings to all,
I was curious if anyone has had experience with their library
providing mobile apps, particularly web apps, for library patrons and
would like to share their experiences? What mobile apps does your
library provide and is there any response from the patrons (i.e. do
they use the services)? Is there any real demand for such services,
and is it worthwhile do you think to pursue providing such services?
Please feel free to e-mail me instead of posting to the list. Thanks in
advance!
