I had a conversation with Long Beach, CA Public Library recently where
they told me Computrace works. A laptop disappeared and Computrace got
it back for them.

We have some Toshiba laptops that we got as part of a grant program a
few years ago. One of the features was built-in tracking should one of
the laptops come up missing. Because it was embedded firmware and not
software, most people would not even know it is on a system.

I found a link to Computrace:

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any experience with security solutions for circulating
laptops within their libraries, especially public libraries? We are
examining the possibility of making some space and efficiency savings by
circulating laptops to adult patrons for in-library use, but there is a
very reasonable concern over how to stop patrons from leaving with the
laptop. Is there a subscription service for lo-jacking laptops? Or
should we depend on a purely administrative solution, like holding
drivers licenses?
