Perhaps this will sound like an obvious suggestion, but if you already have some experience with programming languages the documentation on php.net, http://www.php.net/manual/en/, can be useful. The user comments on the individual module and some of the language reference pages can be quite useful, but they're not always correct. Take them with a grain of salt.
