The following position is available at Cornell University Library:
Director of Library Communications
Located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, Cornell University is
committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive campus in which to work,
study, teach and serve.
The Director of Library Communications leads the development and execution
of communication strategies to promote the mission, goals, priorities, and
accomplishments of Cornell University Library (CUL), and to enhance the
visibility of CUL to internal and external audiences. Library
Communications primarily serves the communications needs of the University
Librarian and her administration, and helps coordinate the communications
needs of all other unit libraries and programs, including Library
Development, and the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.
The Director reports to the University Librarian and manages a
communication team of approximately 3 FTE. The Communications team
includes a publications and graphic design manager, an events manager, an
administrative manager, a staff writer and a web designer. Most staff are
part-time. The Director is responsible for planning and providing
oversight of library events including the Rudin Lecture series, the Fuerst
Awards, the Book Collection Contest reception, the A.D. White Lecture
Series and all other University Library-supported events. The Director
works with the Library Communications team to identify and promote
newsworthy accomplishments via various media outlets, and to produce a
variety of internal and external publications including newsletters, press
releases, annual reports, brochures, and other communications and marketing
materials as needed. Library Communications is responsible for the
library's internal staff website (StaffWeb).
Qualifications: Bachelors degree in communications, journalism, public
affairs, marketing or related field with three to five years related
experience or equivalent combination. Must have strong oral, written and
interpersonal communication skills. Must be a self-directed strategic
thinker. Evidence of successful managerial/supervisory experience, and
strong organizational and project management skills, in an environment
where multiple projects are managed simultaneously. Demonstrated ability
to communicate effectively to a variety of diverse audiences.
Preferred: Graduate degree in related area preferred. Five to seven years
related experience, preferably in academic libraries or in higher education
with experience in public relations, communications, journalism, public
affairs, or related fields.
