NOTICE OF VACANCY
July 25, 2001
TITLE: Systems Librarian
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Head, Distributed Computing Systems,
serves as a Systems Librarian providing support for the planning,
development and implementation of the Libraries distributed computing
environment, with an emphasis on the web-based delivery of information
resources and services to the public and to Libraries' staff.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:
1. Coordinates the day-to-day evolution and maintenance of the
University Libraries' Information Gateway, which includes providing access
to electronic resources, coordinating content and graphics, and
maintaining site organization and structure. Serves ex-officio on the Web
Steering Committee.
2. Carries out new projects, assists in developing guidelines for
library supported web content/services, and identifies policy, technical,
and programmatic needs of the Information Gateway. This includes the
selection and/or creation, evaluation, and deployment of tools and
processes for web content creation and management.
3. Leads Library Systems' ongoing human factors/web usability
efforts, and supervises a Graduate Student Assistant dedicated to
usability work.
4. Participates in the analysis of the networked information needs of
end-users and library staff; assists with the design, development,
testing, and implementation of appropriate solutions.
5. Maintains an awareness of standards, technologies and national
developments related to distributed computing environments using Windows
NT/Windows 2000. Tracks the development of web technologies and their
application in academic libraries, and provides recommendations about
local implementation where appropriate.
6. Participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces, and teams
as appropriate.
7. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties
as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree required.
2. Systems experience in an academic or other complex library running
Windows NT- or Windows 2000-based web services required.
3. Good oral and written communication skills required.
4. Demonstrated user-centered service philosophy and proven ability
to work with both technical and non-technical people required.
5. Demonstrated experience conducting assessment/usability studies
required.
6. Production web experience including the creation and maintenance
of CGI scripts required.
7. Must be knowledgeable about current trends in information
technology particularly those relating to NT and the World Wide Web.
8. Experience with a relational database system desired.
9. Experience with an Innovative Interfaces Inc. library system
desired.
SALARY: $46,000 minimum. Starting salary to be commensurate with
qualifications and background.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at
the rate of 12 working days per year. Excellent medical, dental and life
insurance plans. No state or local income tax.
