Reference and Digital Services Librarians (2)
Cornell University seeks dynamic, energetic applicants for two (2) Reference
and Digital Services Librarian positions in the Olin·Kroch·Uris Libraries
Reference Services Division. Housing material primarily in the Humanities
and Social Sciences, Olin, Kroch, and Uris Libraries make up the largest
unit of the Cornell University Library.
The Olin·Kroch·Uris Reference Services Division is involved in the planning,
development and implementation of innovative tools and services including
LiveHelp (a chat Reference Service), Creation·Stations (high-end,
collaborative, multi-media workstations), and MyLibrary. The Division
incorporates four physical service points in Olin and Uris libraries---as
well as two virtual service points--which together receive over 70,000
queries per year. Reference Service is provided by a combination of
Librarians and Reference Assistants and includes extensive work with
electronic resources and government documents. Our large, dynamic
Instruction program, encompassing undergraduate classes, graduate seminars,
workshops, and individual research consultations, reaches over 5,000
students annually. The Olin and Uris Reference Collections comprise more
than 28,000 volumes, CD-ROM resources, networked electronic resources and
selected microform sets. The Division provides Cartographic and GIS
reference services in a separately staffed and housed Map Collection of
250,000 maps. The Division also maintains a large United Nations depository
collection as well as an Electronic Text Center.
Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Head, Olin·Kroch·Uris Reference
Services Division, the Reference and Digital Services Librarians play a
significant role in planning, developing, and implementing innovative
digital reference and instruction services; share in planning new models of
service; implement special projects; provide reference service, library
instruction, tours and workshops; serve on CUL committees, working groups,
etc.; are active professionally; and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Experience:
Required:
· ALA-accredited master's degree
· Demonstrated ability to contribute to digital service initiatives and to
new models of reference service
· Working knowledge of bibliographic and reference tools
· Excellent organizational and communication skills
· Awareness of issues and trends in information technology and public
services
· Ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele
· Ability to work independently and with others in a demanding and rapidly
changing environment
· Evidence of initiative and resourcefulness in past activities
· Subject expertise in an area of the Humanities or Social Sciences
Desired:
· Up to three years of Reference experience in an academic or research
library
· Successful teaching and/or library instruction experience
· Graduate degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences
· Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages
Salary/Appointment Level: Commensurate with experience
