This is a very interesting issue. There have been several continuing 
experiments with 3D graphical virtual worlds. Some of them have been 
implemented in the form of graphical RPGs.

However, there is an interesting ongoing experiment that you can visit online 
for free. Activeworlds (www.activeworlds.com) is a free download and lots of 
fun. It has been in existence for at least 4 years and has evolved steadily. 
A number of educational institutions have created and maintained worlds there 
for various periods and there is continuous experimentation with virtual art.
