404 page

I need a unix geek to help me put up a page that will appear when a user
clicks to a page that doesn't exist on the college's website. We're
completely redesigning the site and I already know that many of the links
will be changing. (Trust me, despite all arguments in favor of link
stability, in this case that is a Good Thing. We had waaay too many pages
that scrolled on for screen after screen after screen...)

Anyway, I know I can create an HTML document that will appear in lieu of
the standard "we can't find your page and we can't/won't tell you why"
message. What I'm not clear on is how to make that page appear whenever a
404 error occurs. We are on an Apache server, if that helps. Do I create
a file, or use a unix command, or need a script, or what? Any help will
be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
	Val
