Question: Word Processing Access in Academic Libraries to Non-Students

Hello all,

In our library we have a lab where users can use word processing
applications. We also have internet access computers in the reference
area. Our Computer Services department is about to implement logons to all
the computers they operate on campus to restrict access only to students
(they run our lab for us).

The question is: What are the arguments for and against providing word
processing to non-students?

Initially, I am thinking that the provision of word processing is a good
PR tool. Do people on this list think the provision of word processing is
some sort of equity issue that the library should try to continue or is
the provision of access to the Internet on our reference computers enough
to provide access to information?

We will be having a meeting to discuss the proposal to limit the lab in
the library to students only. I would appreciate any input I receive from
people on this list.

One other proposed option is for community users to apply for logons as
needed but this might be an administrative nightmare.

The money for these computers comes from a student fee as does the
printing and support costs.

Thank you.
