Java Telnet

I'm curious as to what happens to these java telnet sessions when people
do not log off properly.
Does the session get closed properly? Does it time out? Or is it still
hanging out there? Our automation vendor (Dynix) uses a simultaneous
user license fee structure, so it's an issue. They've also cautioned
against improper termination of TCP/IP connections, warning that data
damage may occur.
