ALA Annual Conference Program

BEYOND THE ENGLISH CATALOG: UNICODE (R) AND YOUR

Sponsered by the LITA Technical Standards for Library Automation (TESLA)
Committee

ANA Hotel, Metro Room III
Saturday, June 28, 2-4 p.m.

For a long time librarians have been searching for a way to show languages
such as Chinese, Russian and Arabic properly in their catalogs. Now we
have the Unicode Standard. How will it impact your OPAC and other library
applications? This program will introduce the Unicode Standard, cover its
use with USMARC records, review Unicode compliant systems/vendors, and
discuss future library system development and why you need to know about
Unicode.

The speakers will be
Joan Frye Williams. "What the Vendors Aren't Telling You About Unicode
(R)";
Ceciclia Preston, "The Multilingual, Multiscript Net";
Cindy Bogar, "If Unicode (R) Is the Answer, Why Are There Still So Many
Questions?"; and
Joan Aliprand, "Character Sets: Their Mysteries Revealed".

Please join us at 2-4 on Saturday, June 28th. Co-sponsered by LITA MARBI,
ALECTS - Technical Standards, LITA International Relations Committee, and
the MARC Formats Interest Group.
