The Mountain Area Information Network (MAIN) of Western North Carolina is
seeking applicants for a full-time technical director. MAIN is in the start-up
phase of a two-year demonstration project to create a community network for 14
counties of Western North Carolina. The project is funded by a federal grant
from the Telecommunications Information Infrastructure Assistance Program
(TIIAP). The technical director will be based in MAIN's Asheville, N.C.
headquarters. Asheville is a small but cosmopolitan city in the heart of the
Southern Appalachian mountains.
The technical director is responsible for implementing MAIN's technical
design. Specifically, the TD will:
* evaluate and select hardware and software appropriate to the design
* supervise the installation of network hardware and software
* design and implement a network security and maintenance plan
* supervise and deploy MAIN's team of "circuit rider" technicians throughout
the 14-county mountain region
* serve as liaison with telecommunications providers
* represent and discuss MAIN at public meetings when the project director is
unavailable.
Superior oral and written skills are a must. Strong organizational skills
required. Direct experience with the design and deployment of a community
network or "free net" is preferred. Resumes should be sent to the Mountain
Area Information Network, 34 Wall Street, Suite 407, Asheville, N.C. 28801, or
they can be e-mailed to <cml at unca.edu>. Application deadline is Dec. 29.
