The Mountain Area Information Network (MAIN) of Western North Carolina is 
seeking applicants for a full-time technical director.  MAIN is in the start-up 
phase of a two-year demonstration project to create a community network for 14 
counties of Western North Carolina.  The project is funded by a federal grant 
from the Telecommunications Information Infrastructure Assistance Program 
(TIIAP).  The technical director will be based in MAIN's Asheville, N.C. 
headquarters.  Asheville is a small but cosmopolitan city in the heart of the 
Southern Appalachian mountains.  

The technical director is responsible for implementing MAIN's technical 
design.  Specifically, the TD will:

*  evaluate and select hardware and software appropriate to the design

*  supervise the installation of network hardware and software

*  design and implement a network security and maintenance plan

*  supervise and deploy MAIN's team of "circuit rider" technicians throughout 
the 14-county mountain region

*  serve as liaison with telecommunications providers

*  represent and discuss MAIN at public meetings when the project director is 
unavailable. 

Superior oral and written skills are a must.  Strong organizational skills 
required.  Direct experience with the design and deployment of a community
