Hi John,
SMIL is used with DAISY ebooks. DAISY (Digital Accessible Information
System) is a format that can combine text and synthesised speech. DAISY
books can be played on a computer using specialized software, on portable
DAISY players, or on mobile devices using various apps. The DAISY
consortium maintains a list of software that can be used with the DAISY
format <http://www.daisy.org/tools/splayback> , and the consortium is
probably a good place to gather some more information.
Good luck,
Ryan

Subject: [WEB4LIB] using SMIL to highlight text as it is spoken
Hi,
We have recently received an enquiry from someone who is seeking a
portable device that uses a speech synthesizer to vocalize text as it
highlights the text on a small screen. I know Kurzweil 3000 can do this on
a laptop, but he is looking for something that is much more portable.
There is a markup language called SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia
Integration Language) which enables developers to co-ordinate spoken word
with printed text.
Has a portable device using this or any other technology ever been
developed?
I would appreciate any advice.
Regards
John
