using SMIL to highlight text as it is spoken

Hi,

We have recently received an enquiry from someone who is seeking a portable device that uses a speech synthesizer to vocalize text as it highlights the text on a small screen. I know Kurzweil 3000 can do this on a laptop, but he is looking for something that is much more portable. There is a markup language called SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) which enables developers to co-ordinate spoken word with printed text.

Has a portable device using this or any other technology ever been developed?

I would appreciate any advice.
