Can biometrics replace library cards?

If the server holding the biometric information is compromised and that information lifted, can that information them be used to conduct fraudulent transactions? Can the certificates linked to the biometric be revoked, and if so, what do you do then?

Just curious.

Subject: [WEB4LIB] Can biometrics replace library cards?

Hi,

We use library cards with barcodes. Can biometrics be used to replace these cards, or is this technology simply too expensive? I believe that it is possible to store a number based on your finger print without having to store an image of the actual finger print. I know it might be difficult to reassure the public of this, but, on the face of it, the benefits of biometrics would be considerable.

I think our self-service stations would work much better if they employed biometrics rather than barcode scanners.

Regards
John
