Faxing for the public

I'd also been struggling with a good fax solution to offer the public, and
while Fax24 seemed like the easiest solution out there, our director wants
to offer a FREE fax service to the public. The solution we arrived at was
to move one of our fax-enabled Canon copier/printers behind a service desk
and have staff do the faxing for patrons.
One of the possible solutions I proposed was to set up a dedicated scanning
station that had the Canon fax software installed. In that case, patrons
would have been able to fax either scanned hardcopy or document files by
printing them to the Canon fax copier. We decided it would have been too
complicated a process, especially since faxing hardcopy would have entailed
scanning the pages to a file first and then "printing" them. As for
recouping the cost for faxing, it would be interesting if EnvisionWare's
LPT:One print management software could be tweaked to charge for printing
to a fax device.
And I'm sorry... I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have to ask...
anyone out there had any experience in offering a FREE fax service to the
public?
pax.
