Are you interested in building dynamic web sites and apps that respond to user actions? Starting from a grounded, hands-on approach, students of this four-week, online course will learn the basics of Javascript. Students will also learn how to integrate Javascript effectively into the Document Object Model, to build exciting web sites as well as simple web apps capable of performing useful work. Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

- Correctly integrate Javascript into a web page/app
- Create simple web apps to perform useful tasks
- Create useful Javascript structures like loops, functions, and if/then statements
- Use Javascript libraries, such as the jQuery suite, to make Javascript easier to write, and more cross-browser compatible

This course is followed by Jason's Advanced Topics in Client-Side Web Scripting

Jason Bengtson, MLIS, MA is the Head of Library Computing and Information Systems at the University of Oklahoma's Robert M. Bird Health Sciences Library. A co-editor of the Technology column of the Journal of Hospital Librarianship, he is also a member of the NN/LM South Central Region Technology Advisory Committee and ASIS&T. Jason’s work can be seen in publications ranging from Library Hi Tech to the Journal of Library Administration. He has presented on topics such as the evolution of the World Wide Web, innovation in libraries, web development, and theoretical concepts in Information Science.

Course structure
This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment.
