I'd second the recommendation for MRBS. We, too, have made some 
modifications to adapt it to our specific needs.

Overall, the reason I chose to use MRBS is because  it's pretty easy to 
set up, simple to administer, and, if you need to tweak it, the source 
code is fairly simple and straightforward and easy to modify.
