Job Purpose:

This position works with Associate Director for Library IT to develop and build research data curation unit under Library IT division in support of researchers' needs to manage, preserve and provide access to their data sets.  The incumbent is responsible for liaising with Research Institutes, Research Centres, Universities and any other organizations that have research data to be preserved for long term to collect research data for future research purpose.

Key Result Areas


Ø  Participating in setting plans and objectives of the QNL's IT Department and accordingly setting the department's plans and objectives to ensure outstanding performance

Ø  Build the Research Data Curation team as per subject areas

Ø  Head, Research Data Curation serves in a leadership role in developing a comprehensive data management program in support of Qatar's research data management.

Ø  Work with Associate Director Library IT to Gather and analyse information relevant to further development, refining, and maintenance of the QNL IT strategy.

Ø  Collaborates with R&D, Research Institutes, Universities, graduate students, and any other research organizations in Qatar

Ø  Liaise with Researchers and Research Institutions to develop a data program to assist in managing, describing, preserving and making research data available and accessible to appropriate audiences.

Ø  Participates in the Library's efforts to assist Researcher to investigate to evaluate and to support researchers' data practices, processes, technologies, data management, storage, and retrieval practices including those required by funding agencies.

Ø  Identifies appropriate venues for data and serves as an intermediary between researchers and appropriate data digital repository systems managed by the Library.

Ø  Works with faculty and graduate students to develop workflows and metadata necessary to support Qatar's research enterprise and monitors new data and metadata requirements, practices, and standards adopted by government agencies and domain groups.

Ø  Participates in Research initiatives, committees, and task forces related to data management and Preservation.

Ø  Stay current with the awareness of  international developments in data curation and participates in library, regional and national discussions regarding data curation activities and services.

Ø  The position works with other Public services librarians and Researchers to build liaison activities relating to data management, use of locally created and externally available data as well as developing sustainable domain-appropriate data services.

Ø  Developing policies and procedures to manage Research Data sets and Research papers.

Ø  Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure that projects are delivered on time with a high degree of quality.

Ø  Ensure the streamlined operation of the department in alignment with the objectives of the enterprise.

Ø  Ensure full technical and non-technical documents are created in an user-friendly manner and tested by other team members and approved by AD for LIT

Ø  Co-ordinate with LIT team members to research and evaluate new technologies.

Ø  Providing leadership and mentoring to staff including development of training and development plans.

Ø  Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in areas of responsibility

Ø  Participate in team work and committees as needed

Ø  Perform miscellaneous duties and conduct special projects as assigned

Ø  Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility.

Ø  Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner.

Ø  This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position

Job Requirements


Ø  BSc in Computer Science or MSC in Library and Information Science/Archives or any subject related to data management

Ø  Second advanced degree with a Scientific research component would be an advantage

Ø  Minimum 3 years' experience as data management Senior Software Engineer developing Library Applications

Ø  Relevant course work, project or work experience in at least two of the following areas: data curation, digital preservation, research data services, project management

Ø  Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property issues, related academic/research policies and procedures related to data curation and management such as preservation, retrieval, and managing access to sensitive data

Ø  Demonstrated knowledge of research infrastructure, tools, standards and facilities for preservation, data formats and migration, discovery and access

Ø  Demonstrated skill in planning and delivering instruction

Ø  Knowledge of relevant metadata standards (e.g. DC, DDI, FGDC, ISO, SMDX)

Ø  Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Ø  Superior interpersonal and intercultural skills

Ø  Familiarity with current trends in post-secondary education and academic library services

Ø  Experience in managing staff and section

Ø  Experience collaborating with other stakeholders

Ø  Familiarity with research data analysis tools (statistics, data mining)

Ø  Familiarity with major data resources from government and other agencies

Ø  Familiarity with domain specific metadata standards
