Early registration for the 2014 Texas Conference on Digital Libraries<https://conferences.tdl.org/tcdl/> ends Tuesday, April 1. After that, rates will increase, so register today!

Along with the chance to hear the presentations, panels, and keynote speakers that will be part of the main conference program<https://conferences.tdl.org/tcdl/index.php/TCDL/TCDL2014/schedConf/program>, attendees will also have opportunities to participate in a number of exciting special events taking place around TCDL this year.

These include:

ContentDM Users Birds-of-a Feather Session

Date: Tuesday, April 29

Location: Map Room (Room 1.306) of the Perry-Castañeda Library, UT Austin

This CONTENTdm-focused Birds of a Feather session at TCDL 2014 will provide current and potential CONTENTdm users a forum for general discussion and networking.  Intended outcomes from this session include the development of new working relationships between Texas-based academic libraries, the creation of innovative ideas related to CONTENTdm-based digital collections development, and concepts for future collaborative projects throughout the state. This Birds of a Feather session will also serve to gauge interest and commitment among attendees for a future daylong Texas User Group meeting for CONTENTdm.

The opportunity to purchase a boxed lunch is available to those who register for this Birds of a Feather session.

Hacking DPLA at TCDL

Date: Sunday, April 27
Time: 1:00 - 5:00 PM
Location: Perry-Castañeda Library (UT Austin campus), Room 1.224

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is a platform that enables new and transformative uses of digitized cultural heritage materials, based on a metadata repository that provides read-only access to millions of records from across the United States via an open API. Texas content is currently provided by the Portal to Texas History at the University of North Texas, one of nine DPLA Service Hubs, and by content contributed by DPLA Content Hubs. In this workshop, participants will actively code against the DPLA API to build or enhance apps, visualization tools, plug-ins, and other interesting tools that make use of DPLA data.

Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center Curator Talks

Date: Tuesday, April 29
Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Location: Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, UT Austin campus (2nd Floor)

The Harry Ransom Center is among the nation's finest research libraries and a place of unlimited discovery. Come get an up-close look at some of the exciting books, manuscripts, and personal artifacts assembled in the collections of the HRC and discuss them with the center's expert curators.

Two sets of materials will be featured:

*         Costumes and Personal Effects: Jill Morena, Assistant Curator of Costumes and Personal Effects, will show a sampling of costumes and discuss how hidden details, rarely seen by the audience, can reveal the creative processes of performers, designers, and wardrobe staff, as well as hint at their history of use and wear.  The talk will include pieces from the Robert De Niro Costumes and Props, costumes from Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the W.H. Crain Costume and Scenic Design Collection, and iconic designs by Walter Plunkett for the 1939 film, Gone With the Wind, in the David O. Selznick Collection.

*         Harlem Renaissance Collections: Danielle Sigler, Associate Director for Research and Programs, will highlight the Center's collections related to the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Migration. Materials will include an unpublished diary with ties to a Harlem Renaissance poet, Claude McKay's correspondence with his literary agent during the publication of Home to Harlem, the first (and only)  issue of the magazine Fire!!, and photographs from New York Journal American photo morgue.

TACC VisLab Tour

Date: April 29
Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM
Location: Applied Computational Engineering and Sciences (POB) building, Room 2.404, UT Austin Campus

Digital libraries accumulate large amounts of images, video, audio, texts, visualizations and other data that they distribute to their users over the Internet. During a tour to the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) Visualization Laboratory (Vislab) at The University of Texas at Austin, visitors will learn how students, artists, faculty, and the general public interact with digital objects through the latest technologies in display systems. You will learn how supercomputers are used for data collection development, analysis, preservation, and presentation. You will have the opportunity to interact with scientific, humanities, and artistic digital objects and projects using one of the world's highest resolution tile displays, a multi-touch tiled screen, and the Oculus Rift, among other systems.
