Web Applications Librarian

Position Description

The University of Alabama Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative and
service-oriented librarian for the position of Web Applications Librarian.
Reporting to the Head of Web Services, this position is responsible for
administering and coordinating the use of research and instructional
applications (LibGuides and RefWorks) and librarian-created tutorials. As
part of these duties, the successful candidate will be responsible for
overseeing the implementation of guidelines for our LibGuides application
and aforementioned tutorials. Also, the Web Applications Librarian will
serve as the organization’s primary administrator of RefWorks and work to
create resources and provide instruction on its use to students and
faculty. In addition, this position will assist with the implementation of
organizational best practices for the use of social media.

The Web Applications Librarian will work closely with public services
faculty and staff throughout the University Libraries, and will also work
with their Web Services colleagues on the development, maintenance, and
content management of other web applications, sites, and services.

Department Information

The Web Services Department is a group of librarians and professional staff
that are responsible for various web applications, sites, content, and
services. Among its duties, Web Services manages the University Libraries’
EBSCO Discovery Service application, WordPress and Omeka installations,
along with usability and accessibility efforts.

Duties

• Primary administrator of LibGuides with responsibility for implementation
of existing guidelines;
• Library contact for RefWorks with role of providing web-based
information, coordinating instruction, and assisting with marketing the
application to campus users;
• Responsible for oversight of existing best practices for online tutorials
created by librarians throughout the organization;
• Work with colleagues to implement existing guidelines for managing social
media;
• Participate in the development, maintenance, and content management of
web applications, sites, and services;
• Work with the new applications as needed.

Required qualifications

• Master’s degree in Library & Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited
program or advanced degree in Instructional Technology or comparable field
from an accredited institution;
• Experience working in or closely with public services;
• Demonstrable experience creating course and/or subject guides via
LibGuides or comparable application;
• Ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage projects;
• Awareness of emerging technologies and how they can be utilized in an
academic library;
• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS;
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills and
the ability to interact effectively with faculty, students and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing reference/instructional services in an academic
library setting, teaching experience, or knowledge of instructional methods;
• Experience in developing tutorials;
• Experience with managing social media for a business, group, and/or
organization;
• Experience with any of the following content management systems:
WordPress, Drupal, Omeka.

The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, a growing community
with a population of 80,000 residents, approximately 45 minutes southwest
of Birmingham. The campus is noted for its historical architecture,
traditions, and Natural History Museum. Current enrollment is approximately
30,000 FTE.

the Coalition for Networked Information, LYRASIS, the Associate of
Southeastern Research Libraries, and the Network of Alabama Academic

Salary/Benefits:

Full-time position for non-tenure-earning renewable appointment of up to
three years (annual renewal based upon satisfactory performance review,
