hosting options

I recommend looking for discount coupons for the hosting. Many larger hosting companies will offer them. I have two accounts at very discounted rates- namecheap and stablehost. Each is less than 40/yr with coupons. I stopped using namecheap, memory set way too low. I am very happy with stablehost (coupons at webhostingtalk.com<http://webhostingtalk.com>)
Hostgator was my preferred host for years, but I did not like paying $9/mon and they have fantastico. Softalious is a much better auto installer- tons more available than fantastico.
I have moved all my hosting to stablehost for the reduced cost, good support, and features. Two professional library assoc sites and my personal sites.
But Hostgator never gave me any problems.
After you are down to 2 or 3 companies, I recommend two things:
Don't pay full price
Look at auto install scripts for your preferred app and broad coverage of apps

I guess I’ll chime in,
I’m still personally with GoDaddy and honestly haven’t had an issue, but I understand the complaints. I actually have access to my mysql config file, but I don’t know if that means / says anything – maybe we just had different options! Mostly, I’m with GoDaddy because it’s dirt cheap.
Professionally and, ah, semi-professionally as a freelancer, I tend to lean toward Media Temple. They have a reputation for being particularly friendly to webby customers, users that need to tweak a lot or otherwise do more than the ordinary.

I was with GoDaddy for a personal site several years ago, and quickly cancelled because they did not let me edit a mysql config file. And I have basic mysql skills, so I wasn’t doing anything too intense.
I ran to Dreamhost and have not had a problem. And their support is awesome—I got near instantaneous responses over a holiday weekend once).
I’ve heard great things about LIShost as well.

My issue with GoDaddy is that they aren't really a hosting company. To them, hosting is just one more upsell like domain name protection.
The implementation is a trivial detail that gets little attention.

The shared hosting on GoDaddy is using MySQL 5.0 with no announced plan to upgrade. If your apps require MySQL 5.1 and above, you should also avoid GoDaddy.

Given some of the recent issues with GoDaddy, I would advise avoiding them, too.

Run a Google image search for GoDaddy, and then maybe don't use them. No other hosting provider is going to have exposed nipple in the search results. GoDaddy sometimes does even when safe search is on. That and the elephant killing video. Yeah, classy.

We are considering changing our database hosting site from Host My Site to a less expensive alternative with more functionality. Below are what we have narrowed our choices down to.
1) DreamHost
2) JustHost
3) GoDaddy
4) iPage
Our top priorities are up time, multiple/unlimited databases, adequate support, and cost effectiveness. Does anyone have an experience or knowledge they could contribute to our decision?
Thank you in advance for your expertise!
