Please excuse cross-posting:

LITA's Next-generation Catalogs Interest Group (NGCIG) seeks
enthusiastic volunteer to serve as Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect 2012-2014.

The IG "[g]ives LITA a discussion space devoted to developments in the
library catalog, its nature and scope, and its interfaces." We
organize regular meetings and presentations at ALA Annual and
Midwinter, maintain an electronic list and have a community on
ALAConnect.

Check us out: http://www.ala.org/lita/involve/igs/next/lit-igngc
http://connect.ala.org/node/66033 (join us by selecting "Communities"
under "Browse ALAConnect" and typing "next" into the search box)

Be involved in this important discussion. Nominate yourself by sending
a short (50-100) personal statement and your current vita to
mkim at library.ucsb.edu and richr at nsu.law.nova.edu by June 13 (Wed.)

The group will have a business meeting following our ALA program
"Linked Data & Next Generation Catalog" featuring:
Cory Harper (NYU); Phil Schreur (Stanford); Theodore Fons (OCLC);
Yvette Diven (Serials Solutions); Jennifer Bowen (eXtensible Catalog)

Room: 207D

*Linked Data & Next Generation Catalogs Discussions on the concepts of
linked data have been everywhere, but practical strategies for its
implementation are hard to find. “Linked data,” a recommended best
practice for exposing, sharing and connecting pieces of data
information and knowledge on the Semantic Web, is expected to be fully
embraced by the next generation catalogs already in the later stages
of development. During this session, attendees will learn about the
basic concepts of linked data and the impacts and benefits of adapting
linked data in the area of future bibliographical control. To
supplement our discussion, developers from a few next generation
catalog systems will demonstrate their implementations of linked data.

Best,
Michael
