* Julian Prentice, Search Quality Analyst at Google, will discuss how search engines work and the benefits of making your site search engine friendly. She will cover SEO tips and introduce resources to help you optimize your site as well as provide some ideas about teaching SEO and search to patrons.
* Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin, authors of Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day<Search%20Engine%20Optimization%20Interest%20Group%20June%2025%20Mon.%208-10%20a.m.>, will focus on real-world examples to provide tactical advice for library websites, including establishing search visibility goals, defining your organic search audiences, choosing your performance metrics within Google Analytics, and combining SEO and social media in your efforts to improve website performance.
* Joeran Beel, from Docear & one of the authors of Academic Search Engine Optimization (ASEO): Optimizing Scholarly Literature for Google Scholar<http://www.mendeley.com/research/academic-search-engine-optimization/#page-1> & Co, will speak on the importance of academic search engine optimization (ASEO) for researchers but also cover ethical questions. He introduces ranking algorithms of academic search engines and explains differences between them and algorithms of classic search engines. In addition, Joeran provides guidelines and tips for researchers on doing ASEO which will help them to make their papers more findable and indexable by academic search engines and hence increase the paper's visibility in the research community.
SPEAKER BIOS:
Julian Prentice: Search Quality Analyst, Search Quality
Julian is a Search Quality Analyst on the Search Quality team. Her work focuses on keeping the search results full of quality sites and helping webmasters understand Google's quality guidelines. Prior to joining Google in 2010, Julian was an academic librarian and instructor at Chabot College and California State University East Bay. Julian has a MLIS from University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from University of California, Berkeley. She's currently pursuing a Master of Science in Education, Option in Online Teaching and Learning at California State University, East Bay.
Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin, Gravity Search Marketing LLC
Gravity Search Marketing LLC is a partnership between Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin, SEO veterans and recognized experts in the industry who have been working together in online marketing and web development for over 10 years. Couzin and Grappone co-wrote "Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day," published by Wiley Press (2006, 2008, 2011). This has become one of the most popular SEO books on the market.
Gradiva Couzin has been working in search marketing since its early days in 1998. With a history as a civil engineer and experience in website and database development, Gradiva enjoys the technical side of SEO and social media, and loves to facilitate communication between techie and non-techie types. Gradiva works closely with client teams to ensure that SEO best practices are integrated into all web development processes. Gradiva lives in Berkeley, California.
Jennifer Grappone works with clients to develop and implement social media strategies, and advises on all facets of SEO, from copywriting to technical/structural and international. Jennifer advocates a holistic approach to SEO, one that combines elements of good writing, search-friendly site design, usability, and compelling content. Jennifer lives in Los Angeles and sings with the Pasadena Master Chorale.
Joeran Beel, Docear
Joeran Beel worked for several years in the field of web development and classic search engine optimization. Among others he did projects for the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), and the International Organization for Standardization. During his PhD studies at OvGU and UCB Joeran performed research on academic search engines and coined the concept of "academic search engine optimization" (ASEO). Today, Joeran focuses on the development of Docear (http://docear.org), a tool for managing academic literature, and Mr. DLib (http://mr-dlib.org), a machine readable digital library. He also gives seminars about ASEO in cooperation with the innokomm research center.
