We use an Epson Expression 10000 XL scanner purchased in Sept. 2009 from Dell. The purchase price was $2070.32 plus $179 for the extended 2 year warranty. We also purchased the transparency unit at the same time for $414.06, and the 2 yr extended warranty on that was $59.
I used it to put together the following collection for our public library (our first so far) :
http://ccpl-discover.chesterfield.gov/iii/cpro/CollectionViewPage.external?lang=eng&sp=1000003&suite=def
I scanned the newspapers in quarter sections (front of page top, front of page bottom. etc.) and then we compiled the 2 images into one using Photoshop.
Hope this is helpful.

We have used an Epson Perfection V700 photo flatbed scanner, primarily for negatives and photos. I’m sure it could scan newspapers but it would not be optimum for such use. It is great with negatives, photos, and documents and I believe they cost between $400 and $500.
For negatives we have also used a Hasselblad Flextight X5 film scanner. This is a very high dollar ($18,000 in 2009) film scanner we used on a digitization project. We no longer have a use for this scanner and are trying to find a home for it. So if any organization out there wants a great deal on a lightly used profession scanner please contact me off list.

Hallo,
we have a judicial case file archiving going on using Kodak i620 (now 700) scanners. For DIN A0 we use a big OCE scanner - for newspapers a scanner from Zeutschel might be good (but expensive ;-).

Hello,
Our library is in the market for a new scanner. We have done one major archival project using an Epson Perfection 4490. You can view the end product here: http://www.archives-wcpl.net/archive7_hall/. Scanning 81/2x11 and basic images is something the 4490 handles OK but things like newspapers are a nightmare. Also the image quality on some of the photos leaves something to be desired (although that could be operator error). A flatbed scanner would be nice. The Hall Collection (linked above) is our first preservation project and I have one or two more of similar scope in the works, but overall I'd say our needs are modest. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
