Pandigital Supernova & OverDrive?

Thanks to everyone on publib, lita and web4lib who has responded to my plea so far. Only the Pandigital Novel is listed on OverDrive's list of compatible devices for e-books (http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/Default.aspx?type=ebook), and I believe that requires a side-load; the Pandigital Nova is listed on OverDrive's list of compatible devices for e-audio books (not e-books). Fauquier County Public Library staff finally had success downloading/reading library e-books with the Pandigital Nova/SuperNova using the Amazon Kindle Reading App.

* Go to Amazon.com and search for Kindle Reading App or type in http://www.amazon.com/gp/kindle/kcp

*         Choose Android

* You will be prompted to download from the Amazon Appstore for Android

* You will need to sign in with an Amazon account (if you don't have one, you can create one)

* Download the Amazon Appstore for Android to your device

* Once you've downloaded and installed the Amazon Appstore, search the Amazon Appstore for the Kindle Reader

* Download and install the Kindle Reader app to your device; NOTE: You must set your Amazon account up with for 1-click ordering, which requires a valid credit card (or gift card), shipping address, etc., on file, as well as a valid cell phone number for one-click. This is because this is technically for mobile users, i.e., smart phone users.

* Once you've downloaded/installed the Kindle Reader device, go to http://library.fauquiercounty.gov from a computer or device that allows you to access the web in a full/desktop browser (not a mobile browser); the Pandigital Nova/Supernova's browser is a mobile browser and will not display Kindle book format, only ePub

*         Under Services, select e-books & e-audiobooks;

*         Select Overdrive;

*         Browse or search for an e-book. (TIP: If you choose Advanced Search, you can limit format to Kindle and also select to show only titles available);

*         Once you've found a book, click "Add to cart";

*         From your Cart, click "Proceed to Checkout";

*         Select your library system and enter your library card number;

*         Click "Confirm check out";

*         Click the "Get for Kindle" button. This opens the Amazon.com website. You will need to sign in to your Amazon.com account;

*         Click the "Get library book" button;

*         You will be prompted to again log in to your Amazon account;

* Once you've authenticated, your e-book(s) will be delivered wirelessly to the Kindle app installed on your Pandigital. In some cases, the book shows up under Archives.

Returning your e-book(s) early
Here are the basic instructions to return a Kindle e-book.

* An eBook checked out on the Kindle is returned through Amazon. Go to www.amazon.com, and from the Kindle menu on the right, select "Manage Your Kindle".

* Sign in to your Amazon account.

* Select the "Actions" dropdown menu next to the book you want to return.

* (Tip: the words "public library" will appear next to any library e-books)

* From the menu, select "Return this book".

* Select "Yes" to return the book.

* After you return the book, it will still show in Your Kindle Library list. To remove it from the list, select Actions again, and from the dropdown menu select "Delete from library."

Subject: Pandigital Supernova & OverDrive?

Anyone had any luck with the Pandigital tablet/e-reader and OverDrive? While OverDrive lists Pandigital Nova and Pandigital Novel (and apparently only the "white" version) on their compatible device list, trying to install the OverDrive Media Console or the Kindle app did not end up working, at least for the 2 patrons I tried to help today.

The OverDrive Media Console for Android (Pandigital tablet uses the Android operating system) is available in the Android Marketplace (BTW, to use the Android Marketplace/install an app, you need to have a Gmail account...one of my Pandigital patrons couldn't get through the Gmail authentication process). When you try and install, you get an error message that your device is not supported for use with the Android Market (see http://support.google.com/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1141080&topic=1100168&ctx=topic) for details. Pandigital is NOT on the list of supported devices (http://support.google.com/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1727131). So even though they use Android, it's their version, not supported by Google. Pandigital has an "app store" called something like GetJar, but no OverDrive and no Kindle app in there.

Also tried to install the Kindle app. No go in the Android Marketplace per above. You CAN install the Amazon Appstore for Android on the Pandigital, but then when you go to "purchase" the Kindle app (it's free), it kept giving my patron an error that she could not make the purchase because of the way her 1-click ordering was set up. We turned it on, credit card was there, etc.,, but it still didn't work, even though http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_200551840_payment?nodeId=200790830#payment leads you to believe it will work.

Anyway, apparently there was a special on QVC for these Pandigitals, so we expect more questions. If anyone has had luck and documented the process, please share. Would love to get these patrons downloading free e-books from the library via Overdrive.

I'm going to try OverDrive support, but thought I'd ask fellow librarians.

Thanks,
