Virtual Reference Services

Good Morning (as the case may be),

I'm taking a look at whether it would be advantageous to implement chat and
text messaging reference services at a small urban public library. I was
wondering if anyone had any usage statistics on virtual reference services
in midsize public libraries (25,000 - 75,000 pop.)? How often are the
services used, what percentage of your total reference questions do these
questions comprise? How long have you had the service in place? What the
annual cost to implement and then staff these services?

I was also wondering what the main motivator behind the implementation of
these services was? Has it been worth it? Do you think you've met your
initial goals, or to be quite honest, is it something you just felt that
you should have?

I appreciate any guidance or background you can give me.

Best Wishes,
