The 2011 Los Angeles Chapter of American Information Science and
Technology Contributions to Information Science and Technology Award
goes to Dr. Nicholas Belkin. This annual award is presented to one or
more individuals who have made significant contributions to the field.
Recipients are those individuals who are recognized by their
colleagues as exceptional leaders whose dedication, commitment and
vision inspire others, or whose singular contribution to the field of
information science has been particularly significant.
There is no doubt that Dr. Belkin has made significant contributions
to the field of information science. Dr. Belkin has consistently
emphasized the importance of understanding human behavior in the
designing and development of information retrieval systems. His
research work is strong from both theoretical and applied
perspectives. His Anomalous State of Knowledge (ASK) theory was a
pioneering work in understanding why and how people search for
something they don’t know. For the past 30 years, he has published
numerous articles about information retrieval as information seeking
behavior and information search strategies. Dr. Belkin has served as
President of the American Society of information Science and
Technology, and received the 2003 ASIS&T Award of Merit, the 1997 ASIS
Research Award, and the 1990 ASIS Outstanding Information Science
Teacher Award.
