Mapping the past:
how new technologies are changing the way we view historical records
One of the more radical changes that the internet has brought about is
our production and use of maps. The growth of GIS technologies has
flowered in the form of the free map services offered by internet giants
such as Google. Nevertheless, paper maps remain a record of previous
understandings of place almost archaeological in nature.
How do we bring together the old and the new, and mediate between the
paper and the screen in this very special case?
This talk will look at the various tools that have made using digitised
maps over the internet much simpler, and show off some of the ways
Public Records Office Victoria has used those tools.
Speakers:
Asa Letourneau is Digital Projects Officer, Public Record Office
Victoria. His specific interests include visualisations, GIS, virtual
world, serious games, linked open data, interoperability, semantic
technologies and formats, and licensing agreements that will support
navigation of the collection and connect it to a web of related data.
Daniel Wilksch is Coordinator, Digital Projects, Public Record Office of
Victoria. He is particularly interested in history, archives and
storytelling.
