Kiosk browsers

Hi John and All

We are also using Public Web Browser by TeamSoftware Solutions. So far we have found this the best as we gave many records that head off to external providers, and PWB has been the only product that prevents access to these on the opacs, which was the desired result (otherwise we'd have students sitting on opacs all day).

It has a very straight forward configuration/setup, and you can save the config file to a server, and have PWB fetch it on startup, saving the need to make any changes/enhancements to all opacs.

If you'd like more info on our setup, sing out, and I'll see what I can sort for you.

I hope this helps

Cheers

We changed all our OPACs from WindowsXP/Stead State to Debian Linux/Opera web browser in kiosk mode. It has been working well over the past 6 months or so. They auto start into a limited account with a full screen browser and all the history is wiped with a startup script. The firestarter firewall provides whitelist/blacklist functionality. The real time saver with this setup was creating a clonezilla image of one finished OPAC and flashing to all of the others. After the first, each OPAC only took 10-15 minutes to image, additional config can then be done from the admin profile to add remove whitelist/blacklist sites as needed. If they are ever corrupted for any reason a fresh install can be quickly imaged.

I can dig up some more details if anyone is interested.

Hello all,

We are a medium-sized academic library looking for a kiosk browser that would allow patrons to do some quick searches on the catalog and databases, but keep them from loitering on these stand-up machines watching You Tube videos, checking Facebook, etc. (We have an information commons where they can research and study.)

We built an in-house version that does a pretty good job keeping people from leaving the Library website, but the browser is clunky and lacks usability.

For those using Kiosk browsers, what did you purchase? How is it working for you?

Thanks,

John
