Thanks to Bram and to Charlie for their responses. I am just now beginning
to investigate a hosted streaming solution, so I'll let you know what
happens.

Hello Leah,

we haven't used the hosted Kaltura service, as we have deployed the
community edition of the platform directly on in-house servers of our
clients.

best regards,

Bram Luyten

You might want to look into Kaltura, an open source video streaming
platform.

http://www.kaltura.org/
http://www.kaltura.org/project/community_edition_video_platform

Among others, California State University and Cornell have ongoing
implementations.

On the more commercial spectrum, Adobe Flash Media Streaming server is also
a viable candidate:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediastreaming/

To get a full overview of RTMP server software, the resource on wikipedia
is quite extensive:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Time_Messaging_Protocol#Server_software

Out of interest, what kind of content management systems or other
applications are you looking to integrate with your streaming server?

hope this helps,

We are developing a pilot streaming media project at North Park University,
and would like input from other libraries that are streaming now. We plan
to use Quicktime, but wonder what other platforms libraries are using to
stream media locally (not in the cloud). We would also like to know if
your institution is using a streaming server or service, and if so which
one(s)?

Please reply to Laura Burt-Nicholas at lburt at northpark.edu and I'll
compile responses to post back to the list if others are interested.

Thanks,
