Thank you all for your responses to my inquiry regarding tagging and reviews. From your responses I was able to gain perspective about this topic and how it applies to libraries. It is very interesting how they are used so often through retail and/or personal sites but haven't seemed to have gained much popularity in the library world.

Hi,
our OPAC give the possibility to tag and review from 2008. It's been
used in different public library systems by a lot of users, anyhow the
tagging feature is not used so much.
Instead the review capability is really appreciated from our users. The
only side effect is the ability to browse reviews and reviewed material.
A lot of people prefer to blog about her/his last reading, instead to
enrich the library's catalog, where is difficult to see the review.
Our next software release will integrate the reviews in a forum
architecture, so the user will be able to read the reviews under each
manifestation page or as a forum post.
Cheers,
Giulio

Subject: Linksource Resolver Wording
Good Morning!
I am a member of my institution library's Web Advisory Committee and we are
in the discussion of changing the wording of our Linksource link. We
currently use "Check Linksource for possible full text from other sources."
Through many instruction sessions and individual research consultations, we
have discovered that students are intimidated by this wording, and often
assume that the full text of the article is not available. After conducting
a quick review of other libraries, we noticed that some use 'FindIt at ...";
'Find It!'; 'Search for full text;' or 'Citation Online.'
What wording does your institution use for your Link Resolver? What have
you found to work best for your students?
Thank you in advance for your input!

You might want to take a look at the RLG "Sharing and Aggregating Social
Metadata" research project (in which I was a participant), and the first
report to come out of it (2 more are on the way).
http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/aggregating/
The first report reviews uses of social metadata by libraries, archives,
and museums and includes some sites that offer tagging/commenting in the
catalog.

Sherry,
Personally, if I saw "Citation Online" or any text / links involving "Citation" -- I would not think FULL TEXT, and would not follow the link, unless I wanted the full citation.

Is it possible to configure an OpenURL Resolver yourself? If so, does
anyone have simple instructions for how to do it? I am in trying to
configure the WordPress Plugin OpenBook for use on our new website (which
is in development,) and I'd like the book data to link back to our own
catalog. Does anyone have experience with doing this if you don't already
have an OpenURL resolver?
Thanks!

From: "Varnum, Ken" <varnum at UMICH.EDU>
Subject: Re: Linksource Resolver Wording
We (University of Michigan) use a variety of labels centered on the brand
for our link resolver, MGet It. In 3rd party databases (ProQuest, Google
Scholar, Web of Science, etc.) and other places where the link doesn't
know that it will get full text, we use the MGet It logo and/or the text
"Availability at U-Michigan". In our Summon-powered article discovery
tool, which theoretically knows when full text is going to be available,
we use the MGet It logo and the appropriate label "Full Text" or "Citation
Only". Where the link is theoretically full text, we include a link to
report a problem getting to full text.
The problem report form asks for the user's campus email address and a
description, from a list of likely options, of what went wrong. This
report goes to our "ask a librarian" reference service for triage. Actual
problems with the full-text link end up in Technical Services; the rest
are resolved with the user directly.
You can see this in action at
http://www.lib.umich.edu/searchtools#articlesplus/search -- you will see
the two kinds of links in the search results, even if you aren't able to
get to our licensed full text copy.

I don't think what I do will work for OpenBook; but you might figure it =
out from the following info.
=20
I construct URLs one at a time for catalog results by passing =
parameters to the searchresults page. This is done slightly differently =
depending on what website platform is being used. Ours look something =
like this:
=20
http://www.yourdomain.com/searchresult.aspx?bid=3D64576534 You may be =
able to get examples of how to do this from the documentation for your =
ILS.
=20
This example is based on our own unique identifier for each record. If =
you can configure one that is based on the ISBN that works to retrieve =
correct book records in your catalog AND you can configure the links in =
OpenBook to use the string you supply (the whole URL construct with =
everything but the variable value) and then specify to OpenBook what =
value from their record that you want to tack onto the string, you may =
be able to set up something that works.
