[Web4lib] Virtual Library from scratch

I've seen both public and academic libraries (Loyola University Chicago & University of Washington Libraries come to mind) using Facebook in really wonderful ways. Both use the platform to announce new resources, upcoming events, long had resources, and even QwestionPoint qwidget access (reference chat services). Additionally, I've seen use of instant polling on a variety of library services or just engaging their patrons with leisure preferences (i.e. what books are you reading?) To me centralizing and establishing a presence on a popular site like Facebook with multiple functions in one place (blogging, status updates, calendar, etc) is a good way to get started. It's low cost and you really meet your patrons where they are anyway....

We're actually doing the same thing. Our focus is on maximizing what can be done anywhere. We're starting to use Library H3lp to extend our reference desk. We don't have the budget for ebooks, but they are on the wish list. We're also working on providing tutorials on all the databases that can be used outside the library. As we add online services, we're trying to do press releases and announcements as a "see what your tax dollars are doing."

As the Anaheim Public Library is downsizing staff and reducing open hours to the public, Library Administration wants me to help create a Virtual Library presence for the stated purpose of "Developing and deploying twenty first century library services that use the Internet and social networks to connect with users and promote library value."

So my first step toward this is to brainstorm for ideas on accomplishing this. That is where you come in. If you were given this assignment, what would you try to do?

First determine what you want to achieve, then obtain the best technology to attain that goal.
