VLC is a wonderful tool.  If it doesn't work for you, or if you prefer a
command-line tool (suitable for batching 1000 videos, for example), you might
consider ffmpeg.  It sounds like you're seeing problems with variable bit rates
in the DVD video; you could rip a fixed-bitrate video from the DVD, rip the
audio, and stitch them back together.
