Position Announcement
DIGITAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN, Tulane University, New Orleans. Howard-Tilton Memorial Library seeks a creative, dynamic librarian to serve as Digital Services Librarian.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Digital Services Librarian is an innovative and service-oriented librarian who takes overall responsibility for the Library's main website, including oversight of content and design; plans future redesigns and innovations to the site; engages in usability testing and other assessments of the website; and coordinates and facilitates the development of access to web content and services from library departments. The librarian works closely with a Web Steering Committee comprised of representatives from units around the library, and supervises a full-time web programmer. This librarian also coordinates digitization projects library-wide, setting standards for the creation of content and metadata, and represents the library to other groups around campus and the region engaged in the creation of digital collections. Reporting to the Director of Public Services, the librarian shares reference duties with other librarians and participates in the library's instruction program. The librarian may also participate in collection development.
REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; knowledge and experience with web design, metadata, and information architecture; some web coding and programming experience such as PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, and CSS; background in developing digital initiatives such as archival projects or database-backed dynamic websites; working knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core as well as digital preservation standards; working knowledge of relevant Web 2.0 technologies for digital content delivery; skill in translating student and faculty needs into web functions; experience in assisting library users with online resources in an academic library; knowledge of current copyright and licensing issues; project management skills; potential for leadership in a collaborative setting; effective communication and teaching skills; enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment; willingness to participate in professional development and in the shared governance of the library and the university.
PREFERRED: One year or more of post-MLS experience. Experience with ColdFusion and/or CommonSpot content management system. Experience with library instruction, outreach, and reference services. Familiarity with collection development in an academic library.
ENVIRONMENT: Tulane University is an AAU/Carnegie Research I institution with its main campus located in picturesque uptown New Orleans. Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is the university's main library, an ARL research collection supporting programs in the humanities, social sciences, and the sciences. Recently, the library has been reorganizing, building its collections, and developing an architectural plan for expanded library facilities. The library is also engaging in a website redesign which includes migration to the university's content management system. During this period of dynamic change, the library seeks to build its professional staff by recruiting talented, energetic librarians interested in participating in the recovery of Tulane and New Orleans. COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Librarians are academic appointees. Librarians do not have tenure or faculty rank, but in other respects receive the benefits of faculty members.
