Librarian for Germanic Studies, French and Italian,
Comparative Literature, Classical Studies and Linguistics
The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are seeking a creative and enthusiastic individual for the position of Librarian for Germanic Studies, French and Italian, and Comparative Literature. Classical Studies and/or Linguistics may also be included in the position, depending on the interests and qualifications of the appointee. The person serving in this position is a member of the Subject and Area Librarians Council (SALC) (http://www.libraries.iub.edu/index.php?pageId=301) and reports to the Head of SALC.

The IU Libraries consist of twenty libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the state. The IU Bloomington Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia, including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, the Association of Research Libraries' Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition Project (SPARC), the Digital Library Federation, the Center for Research Libraries, and the Research Libraries Group.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The librarian in this position serves as the collections and public services specialist for Germanic Studies, French and Italian, and Comparative Literature. Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, this position may also be responsible for Classical Studies, and/or Linguistics. He or she:
* Serves as the liaison to the relevant departments.
* Helps to staff the Libraries' Research Collections Reference Desk, and provides advanced reference service in areas of responsibility.
* Builds and manages collections in all formats; manages domestic and foreign approval plans in areas of responsibility; makes preservation treatment recommendations for these collections.
* In cooperation with the staff of the Libraries' Digital Library Program and constituents, identifies collections and resources suitable for publication in digital form.
* Oversees collections budgets in areas of responsibility and helps to develop external funding opportunities.
* In consultation with faculty, makes decisions about materials to be sent to the Libraries' offsite storage facility.
* Prepares collections and resource guides, creates and maintains subject-specific websites.
* Participates in the Libraries' instructional activities.
* Participates in library and system-wide professional activities.
* Collaborates with peers in other libraries in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and the Association of Research Libraries on matters relating to collections.
QUALIFICATIONS: An American Libraries Association (ALA)-accredited master's degree in library or information science and an advanced degree in a subject area relevant to the responsibilities listed above are preferred, but candidates with an advanced degree in either library or information science OR in a relevant subject area, AND an appropriate combination of education and experience in an academic setting will also be considered. Required: reading knowledge of French, German and Italian, with proficiency in at least one of the three. Bibliographic knowledge of Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, and Latin or Greek. Understanding of the information needs of scholars and the application of digital and information technologies within the research environment. Experience in collection development and teaching or bibliographic instruction. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to work independently and collegially in a complex, rapidly changing environment. Ability to apply new technologies to library services. Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track appointment.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary and rank are negotiable and competitive, depending upon qualifications and experience. This is a tenure-track academic appointment that includes eligibility for sabbatical leaves. Benefits include a university health care plan, TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity plan, group life insurance, and liberal vacation and sick leave.
