[Web4lib] UPDATE: OLPC computer, Gecko browser and popups

Mary - I checked with a co-worker who is involved in the OLPC project
and here's his input:

"The Gecko browser engine may well have popup blocking, but also the
window manager, Sugar, doesn't
allow multiple overlapping windows. You have to go back to the main
window to select a sub-window
that would normally be rendered as overlapping windows. A conscious
choice on the part of the
  OLPC developers."

Hope this helps.

Terry

Subject: [Web4lib] UPDATE: OLPC computer, Gecko browser and popups

I have found out that it is not the browser but the operating system
that is on the OLPC XO laptop -- it only allows one window open at at
time. Time to go see the campus tech people.

I'm basically illiterate when it comes to the techie side of computer
use and I need some assistance.

When OLPC (one laptop per child) had their "give one, get one" drive, I
participated. My idea for this laptop was to take it to meetings and
conferences because of its portability. I love this 'mini' laptop except
for one thing: remote access to our school email requires a popup and
evidently this Gecko browser has a popup blocker. Any idea how to get
around it? My first thought was to install Mozilla Firefox, however,
installation download and installation also requires a popup.

I have spent sometime on the OLPC wiki but haven't found the solution so
far. Anyone else encountered and fixed this yet?
