INDIANA UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES-BLOOMINGTON
Head, Customer and Access Services
(Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian)

The Indiana University Libraries-Bloomington seek an innovative, experienced, and user-oriented professional to serve as Head, Customer and Access Services at the Herman B Wells Library. This management position has an opportunity to play a strategic role in transforming the delivery of information to aid students and researchers at a leading university in a rapidly changing information environment.

Founded in 1820, Indiana University-Bloomington (IUB) has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 39,000 students and 1,800 faculty. With a world-renowned research reputation, IUB is also known for its innovative academic programs and attentiveness to undergraduates. The campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship in limestone.

The IUB Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu/) are one of the leading academic research library systems in North America, providing strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries or units on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the six campuses across the state. The IUB collections include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and sound recordings in over 900 languages. The materials support every academic discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and social sciences. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and the Research Libraries Group. In addition, IUB is a participating member of Google Books Project, and is a leader in the development of the CIC Shared Digital Repository.

The Customer and Access Services Department (CASD) consists of four units: Administrative Services, Circulation and Security Services, Document Delivery Services, and the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF). With a staff of 32 full time employees and a large number of student workers, these units encompass circulation, stacks maintenance, security/safety services, interlibrary loan, document delivery services (Books By Mail, Request Delivery, and Request Article Delivery), electronic reserves, and off-site storage, processing and delivery.

The incumbent will provide strategic and effective management of the four units of the Customer and Access Services Department to continually seek innovative ways to deliver information; work with members of Public Services and Library Information Technologies to embed services into the Libraries' web site and integrated library system; and work with the Associate Dean for Collection Development and Digital Publishing to explore delivery options as part of a collection development strategy, support the Libraries' digitization efforts and set priorities for the relocation of collections to off-site storage. The incumbent will also participate in collection development for one or more academic disciplines and associated faculty and student liaison activities, and engage in professional activities appropriate for a tenure-track position.

QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum of three years of increasingly responsible relevant professional experience in an academic or research library system; supervisory experience with full-time staff and students; managerial experience in one or more areas of access services (e.g., circulation, reserves, stacks management, interlibrary loan/document delivery and/or copyright compliance); demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership and management and to work collaboratively in an environment of continuous change; evidence of strong planning, organizational, budgetary, analytical and project management skills; record of innovation and creative problem-solving with an interest and involvement in emerging digital information environments; experience with integrated library systems; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong team-building skills; evidence of an ongoing record of professional development and contribution; ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track position.

This is a tenure-track academic appointment that includes eligibility for sabbatical leaves.
