In the Indiana University Bloomington libraries we have a relatively decentralized web site that both requires and encourages librarians and library staff who administer departments and branch libraries or who serve as collection developers in subject areas to post content to the site using a home-grown content management system.
Our CMS maintains a standard look and feel for the site, but recent usability tests have shown that we have uneven content and some outdated information. As a result, we are trying to create a "web editor" position to ensure consistency in terminology, to assist page owners in adding information to the web site, to provide training and trouble-shooting, to create pages and fix problems with existing pages, and similar tasks. We are finding that we do not have good concrete words to describe what we want the position to do.
We have looked at position descriptions from elsewhere in the University and on the web. But we found few descriptions for existing positions in libraries.
Do you have a web editor position in your library?
What are its chief duties?
To whom does the position report: The library director? Another administrator? The web master? Someone else?
What authority does the position have to create or change pages on your library web site?
Would you be willing to share your position description with me, either online or with a mailed paper copy?
I will be happy to share what I learn with others who are interested, if they wish to write to me to let me know of their interest.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Mary
