It won't help you if you want to continue to use the old PC with ethernet, but you could get an IDE to USB adapter:

I've been very happy with it and have used it quite extensively to get data off of old hard drives. Most of the new computers we get don't have IDE adapters, so this let's me access IDE drives on SATA-only and laptop computers with a USB port.

If you have to keep using the old computer, a PCI (or <shudder>ISA</shudder>) ethernet adapter is the way to go and they should be really cheap used.
