Position: Reference Librarian for Emerging Technologies
Available: July 1, 2007

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative,
outgoing, and collaborative Reference Librarian for Emerging
Technologies to join the Electronic Services Section in the Davis
Library Reference Department. This entry-level position offers an
excellent opportunity to work in an ARL Library and proactively apply
innovative solutions to the provision of information resources and
services.

Responsibilities

* Develop and deliver high quality outreach and instructional services
to faculty, students, and scholars in assigned academic disciplines to
support the discovery, use, and integration of the library's
collections into research and the curriculum.

* Participate in management and evolution of the Davis Library
Knowledge Commons.

* Lead the departmental Web Team and assist as needed with
library-wide web initiatives, including usability testing.

* Share in the development of the reference collection in assigned
subject areas.

* Investigate and work with other library groups to implement, as
appropriate, Web 2.0 technologies.

* Design, pilot, and assist with creation of instructional
programming, including web-based guides and tutorials, using emerging
technologies.

* Manage scanning services.

* Provide general and specialized reference service at the Davis
(Main) Library Reference Desk and via online chat, IM and email,
including night and weekend rotations.

The Librarian works with other members of the Electronic Reference
Team to provide overall direction for the Reference Department's
electronic services, and consults and collaborates with Library
Systems, Instructional Services, and other units.

The Reference Librarian for Emerging Technologies reports to the Head
of Electronic Services. In addition to Electronic Services, the
Reference Department includes Government Documents, Microforms, the
Maps Collection, GIS services, and several subject specialists
covering the humanities, social sciences, business and economics,
data, and government information. For more information, please visit

13 librarians, 7 support staff, and many student assistants.

Qualifications

Required:
* Masters degree from an ALA-accredited program.
* Experience providing effective reference service to a diverse
community of users.
* Experience with HTML and the creation of web pages.
* Experience with a variety of electronic reference tools in various
formats (web-based, CD-ROM, data sets).
* Experience in instruction/teaching.
* Excellent design and graphics skills.
* Strong commitment to public service.
* Ability to plan and assist in implementing innovative electronic services.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team with diverse groups in an
atmosphere of mutual respect.

Preferred:
* Experience building dynamic web pages using technologies such as PHP
and MySQL.
* Experience integrating multimedia content into web pages.
* Experience with bibliographic management software such as RefWorks or Endnote.

Salary and Benefits
This is a continuing twelve-month appointment; salary is commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Twenty-four days vacation leave,
eleven holidays, and twelve days of sick leave; comprehensive major

several retirement plan options including TIAA/CREF.
