This is neither particularly quick or dirty, but the best intro to
AJAX I've seen is the "head first" series title -

AJAX. It's shorter than most of  the titles in that series (hence the
"rush" in the title), but it is really great at getting the concepts
across. You may want to look at http://www.ajaxian.com as well - they
link to a lot of online tutorials.
