[Web4lib] Click Counters

I am very interested in this tool as well. Our library is going to be
launching a new site and would like to keep detailed statistics of the
usage. The only problem is that our web site host does not provide usage
statistics. Currently we use a link that accesses an image on a BCLA server.
They keep general stats on our website that way.
I noticed Google analytics shows the locations of who is accessing the page.
We don't want to count the initial hit that is generated when users log on
to the public internet computers since our homepage is set to our library
website. How do other libraries handle this?
Thanks and have a great day!

I added Google Analytics to our main web site this semester to see what
we get compared to WebTrends. It's free, but you need to get a Google
account, and must add Google's "Urchin_Tracker" script to each page you
want to track.
Adding the script is easy if your pages have an included footer file.
Put it in the footer and you're done. If you have some pages that do not
use your standard footer, or pages that should not be tracked, they need
to be dealt with separately. If you don't use a footer "include," you
might be able to use search and replace to stuff the code above the
body tag on each page.
The data can viewed on the Analytics site or downloaded in Excel format
for whatever time period you designate. You can allow other library
staff members to view the data.
