Just popping out of digest mode...
If you have a strong understanding of relational databases,
normalization and SQL, all you need is the MySQL online documents. In
fact, they're far, far better than any of the PHP/MySQL books I've read.
The books are often out of date and have incorrect
installation/administration instructions.
If you haven't studied relational databases, normalization/optimization
and SQL, do so before learning MySQL or any other real database
management system (i.e. NOT Access). I'd recommend "Modern Database
Management" by Hoffer, Prescott & McFadden. Any recent edition will get
you up to speed.
The only MySQL-specific stuff you need to know is how to create users,
enable access, etc. That's in the online manual.

Can anyone recommend good introductory book for learning MySQL? A
search of local library catalogs brought up a long list, so I'm
wondering which ones others have found helpful.
Thanks in advance,
