POSITION: Web Development Coordinator
AVAILABLE: November 1, 2006
DESCRIPTION
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an innovative,
responsive, decisive and collegial information professional to provide
leadership in managing the web presence of the University Library.
Reporting to the Head of Systems and working with key Library web
constituents, the Web Development Coordinator manages a team of web
development librarians, programmers, and student interns. The successful
candidate will work in concert with staff of the Carolina Digital Library
in the creation, design, and organization of Library web sites.
The Library’s website is the gateway to Library services, including
public access to the Library’s catalog, the full text of over 40,000
electronic journals and databases, and digital content. As leader of the
Web Development Team in the Systems Department, the Web Development
Coordinator will stay informed of new technologies that will enable the
Team to manage an environment of user-focused library services. The
Coordinator will monitor and identify innovations in the use of the web for
the delivery of resources, services, and information. The Team will
create, design, and organize websites and resources to facilitate the
instructional and research needs of users. The Coordinator will be
responsible for the overall assessment, planning, development, and
maintenance of the Library’s website.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science or an advanced
degree in a relevant subject area such as Information Science or Computer
Science. Strong familiarity with library electronic information resources
with demonstrated knowledge of how people use information and how its
effective organization can facilitate scholarly research. Demonstrated
advanced knowledge of web development practices; experience in building
database-backed, dynamic websites; and command of site
management/assessment tools and gateway/interface toolkits.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage time, set priorities,
manage projects, and work under pressure. Creative problem solving skills,
strong analytical skills, and ability to negotiate solutions with diverse
groups. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, a proven
service orientation, and a willingness to share expertise.
Preferred: Experience with HTML- or Java-mediated access to databases;
knowledge of SGML and or XML; knowledge of developing metadata and access
standards for Web resources and experience in the creation of Web-based
information for library staff or users.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits
of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan. At the
