[Web4lib] The Library, FaceBook, and My Space

We put up a Facebook profile about 10 months ago and have done virtually 
no marketing, beyond mentioning it to library staff.  We did invite any 
other library we could find through searching to be our friend, which 
attracted a bunch of other friends from those schools.  There is also a 
group which seems to have membership from many students at our school, 
which we also belong to.  Overall, we have 51 friends with 29 of them from 
our school.

We don't really expect much from Facebook, beyond putting our name out 
there and putting a friendly face on the library.

I'd be interested to hear if there are others who are more actively 
involved in Facebook.

Bill (and anyone else interested),

I've had a Facebook group running for the UTC Lupton Library for a few
months now. Have kept the advertisement reasonably low, with me
basically mentioning it to students during my instruction sessions in
order to capture their interest.

That said...it's been a big disappointment on my end thus far. I'm not
willing to give up yet, but students seem very put off by the idea of
using these social tools for "work". I'd be interested in hearing others
thoughts, though.

to see if any are interested in starting an academic library Facebook

To college community

Welcome back!  As an experiment I have setup memberships for the Library
in My Space and FaceBook, where many college students hang out and
network online.
I am hoping to reach out to students where ever you are in this effort.
