Library Instruction Coordinator and Reference Librarian
University Libraries, University of North Carolina at Greensboro
The University Libraries seek an innovative, knowledgeable and dynamic
individual to coordinate the library instruction program with an emphasis
on the first-year experience. This position reports to the Head of
Reference and Instructional Services and will join a department of nine
librarians and four paraprofessionals. It is a twelve-month tenure-track
faculty position. Demonstrated professional achievement, service, and
scholarly/creative activity are required for reappointment and tenure.
_Major Responsibilities_
Coordinate and provide leadership for an active library instruction
program. Design classroom instruction and instructional materials. Develop
online tutorials. Communicate with appropriate teaching faculty and
administrators who work with first-year students and the undergraduate
curriculum. Assess the first-year library instruction program. Provide
general reference service in a central library that covers the humanities,
social sciences, the sciences and government information; participate in
the virtual reference schedule/service?. Serve as a liaison for
collection management and instruction to academic departments.
_Work Environment_
UNCG is a doctoral, research-intensive institution with an enrollment of
over 15,000, 20 doctoral degree programs, 54 master degree programs, and a
broad range of academic programs for undergraduate education. The
University Libraries support the learning and increasing research missions
of the University through its print and electronic resources, reference
and instructional services, and other outreach programs, with collections
of 1.2 million volumes, over 4,300 current journal subscriptions, more
than 30, 000 electronic journals, over 300 electronic databases, and with
80 percent of receiving federal government documents. The University’s
190-acre campus is one mile from the center of Greensboro, a city of more
than 230,000 and is in the Piedmont Triad (with a population over 1
million), an area of great natural beauty, diverse industry, cultural
arts, and mild temperature.
_Qualifications_
Required
ALA-accredited MLS. Minimum of two years experience in reference services
in an academic setting. Teaching experience in a group setting. Strong
service orientation and enthusiasm for providing high-quality reference
service utilizing traditional and electronic/networked resources;
excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability
to work collaboratively with librarians, faculty, staff and students.
Demonstrated knowledge of web design and usability standards. Demonstrated
knowledge of HTML and graphical HTML editors.
Preferred
Experience developing online tutorials. Experience with image editing
software.
_Salary and Benefits_
The salary at the appointment is competitive and depends upon
qualifications and experience. Standard benefits include state or
optional (including TIAA/CREF) retirement plans, state health plan, and 24
vacation days per year.
