[Web4lib] New server up & running - well, sort of

Hi again, Lynne,

Congrats on your success! To tackle your questions...

1. If you are only hosting the one website no host headers are needed;
if you run the library website as the 'default' website in IIS Manager
you can still host other websites (but these extra/secondary websites
will need host headers)

2. Leave no website files in default locations (put the website files on
a separate drive/partition if possible) - this will negate most
scriptkiddie hacks. Yes, I mean relocate the error files, too

3. Verify that only the minimum number of services are running (depends
on what you have going on on the server) and imho, disable the
Administration website - that feature is just asking for trouble. IIS
Manager handles the website fine and the fewer points of entry the more
difficult it is to disrupt. The easiest way to do this (and it's
educational, too) is to shut off services one by one; when the server
stops responding as desired, go back in and re-enable the last service
disabled and continue down the list.

>Howdy!
>I have my new server running our web page - hooray! I
uninstalled/re-installed IIS6 to do it, and made NO changes to default
settings except file locations.

>Now for my questions:

>1. Do I need to put in the host header address?

>2. I have gobs of good info on securing the server - what are the most
important things to do along that line? I don't have FTP or Telnet
installed at all.

>3. What am I missing (more or less rhetorical, but if there's something
obvious, I'd appreciate the info!)?

>Thanks!
