Digital Resources Librarian (Position #: 011391
Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education (FLITE)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
New tenure-track public services position designed to facilitate the
effective and efficient use of digital information resources. Responsible
for ongoing day-to-day monitoring of digital resources to assure access;
participates in troubleshooting activities in cooperation with the
automation librarian, the distance education librarian and others; delivers
timely updates to library staff. Assists in developing access to library
resources via the campus portal and WebCT. Responsible for coordination of
electronic reserves. Trains library staff and other university personnel
on the utilization of digital resources; writes and maintains appropriate
user guides and web pages. Collaborates with staff from various units to
identify, evaluate, and select digital resources; some public service desk
coverage; appropriate university-wide and professional activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required - ALA-accredited masters degree in library or information science;
significant understanding and knowledge of digital resource access and
information architecture; ability to teach; experience with an integrated
library system; demonstrated ability to effectively use technology and
digital resources. Must possess excellent writing skills in combination
with effective interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and
problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and as part of a
team; strong customer service orientation; interest in innovative uses of
information technology for library applications.
Preferred - Work experience in an academic library; experience in
troubleshooting complex interrelated systems; knowledge of OpenURL standard
and citation linking software (preferably SFX); demonstrated ability to
utilize current computer software for multifaceted tasks; additional
graduate degree.
SALARY:
$36,000-$40,000 for a 12-mo. tenure-track faculty appointment with rank,
plus an excellent benefits package valued at approximately 38% of base
salary. Comprehensive benefits (after applicable eligibility and accrual
periods) include 20 days vacation, two days personal leave, paid holidays,
insurance (health, dental, vision, life, disability), medical reimbursement
account, retirement system options (e.g., TIAA-CREF, Fidelity) with 12%
university contribution, tuition waiver, and generous support for
professional activities.
DESCRIPTION OF FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY:
Serving more than 11,000 students, Ferris State University offers 120
academic programs in a variety of disciplines, with graduate and
professional programs in optometry, pharmacy, nursing, criminal justice
administration, information systems management, and education. FLITE
(Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education) features a
variety of public work and study spaces, a total seating capacity of 1,300,
and computer connectivity for more than 1,000 users. The library uses the
Innovative Interfaces Millennium system. Ferris’s main campus is located
in Big Rapids, Michigan, a city of 12,000 located on the picturesque
Muskegon River, 55 miles north of Grand Rapids and within 220 miles of
Detroit and Chicago. Nestled in the middle of western Michigan’s vacation
heartland, this former logging community offers a variety of recreational
opportunities, including canoeing, tubing, and fishing on the Muskegon;
biking, hiking, and cross-country skiiing on the White Pine trail; camping
in four county parks; and boating, swimming, and fishing on many of the 101
lakes in Mecosta County. Some of the Midwest’s best ski resorts are to the
